Liang Bua Cave, discovery site of the Flores hobbit, Homo floresiensis. Archaeologists excavate two deep pits at right. Sediment is hauled out by the bucketful, wet-seived in a nearby aqueduct, then returned to the cave where it will be used to backfill the pits at the end of the field season. Some 200 tons of sediment are meticulously processed within the span of a few months.
