Komodo dragons, the world's largest living lizards, are best seen at Rinca and Komodo islands, just west of Flores. But in hobbit times, Flores dragons grew half again as big as today's Komodos. That's 5 times longer than hobbits! This threat, along with hobbits' long arms, suggests that Homo floresiensis took to the trees for protection. <br />
<br />
Alas, unlike Tolkien's Treebeard, there's no evidence that Flores trees hurled stones and insults at hobbit enemies.
