Children at a Merapi refugee camp play with Javanese shadow puppets before a 'wayang kulit' performance. The puppets in this collection, on loan from the Yogyakarta sultan's royal palace, number in the hundreds. Delicately carved on water buffalo hide, painted with traditional pigments and layered with gold leaf, the puppets have stood up well to vigorous performances--and curious kids--for over a hundred years.
