The 1997/98 forest fires in East Kalimantan were the largest in human history, and recognized as one of the greatest environmental distaters to date. Affording to CIFOR, 11.7 million hectares of forest were lost, and economic impacts topped US$ 6 billion. Losses to biodiversity and human life and health cannot be counted.
