As soon as he could write, Evans Zama, a clan leader of the Volaikana tribe, has been recording oral histories which stretch back 8 generations. He has compiled several handwritten volumes that document his family tree, land rights, locations of tombs, etc. Volaikana, he says, means "war survivors", explaining that his people evacuated a broad area due to headhunting threats. Some of the property that British colonials and the Solomons government designated as "alienated lands" (including the Arnavon Islands) were once owned by the Volaikana, he says.
