Mount Merapi unleashes a 6-kilometer "awan panas" eruption in the shape of a giant seated poodle at 1:30 a.m. on 11 June 2006. The hind legs of poodle mark an eruption streaming down Kali Gendol, aiming towards Kali Adem, the site of two deaths on 14 June. Many observers wonder why the alert status of the volcano was lowered on 13 June following recent large eruptions and in the face of continued threats that 6,000,000 cubic meters of fresh lava dome appeared ready to tumble from the summit.
