Lava and ash erupt from Mount Merapi, Yogyakarta, Indonesia, in the early morning hours of 15 May 2006. The eruption marked the onset of intense activity at one of the world's most active volcanoes, shortly preceding a devastating earthquake centered on a tectonic plate margin some 60 kilometers south of the mountain summit. A tsunami panic following the quake sent hundreds of thousands of people fleeing toward the erupting volcano, where activity continues to increase in the wake of recent tremors.
