Dr. William Jungers tries fitting a hobbit hip bone (ilium) to a cast of Lucy's tail bone (sacrum). To his surprise, they were a perfect fit. Lucy, the 3.2 million year old type specimen for Australopithicus afarensis, from Ethiopia, was an early biped that stood just over a meter tall. The close match with a 17,000-year-old fossil in Indonesia is astounding. Taken in whole, the pelvic reconstruction suggests Homo floresiensis had a small birth canal well-suited for small-skulled babies.
